Perhaps the first day and the early days at Maseno University will always be marked in my life as the dearest. I remember I insisted on coming from home on my own amid worried looks from my parents who according to me were only raising a storm in the tea cup. With enough rumors of freedom and the institution where anyone was treated by everybody as an adult I couldn’t belittle myself to be escorted as a form one student. On alighting from a matatu which had defied all Michuki laws; the firstthing that struck me as odd was when I was directed from College campus main gate which in my mind was the university and directed to Siriba campus which I found strange due to the grinning monkeys swinging aimlessly on branches. All around me other students trudged like drunkards carrying big suitcases to their respective halls ofregistration, I moved to the monument of Siriba campus where Arts and Social Sciences students were registering.Among the first days I frequented the Campus Palace for the bottle to shekilegi to the tunes because the money from home and the interested-rated one from HELB made me ride in cloud number nine.Looking back, I remember how we could show-off the palm toys irrespective of either it was first hand or tenth-hand from seedy backstreets of Nairobi.I was left at loose because my simuya tochi a.k.a Nokia 1100 which made my cousins take ‘photos’ cuddling it was a thousand staircases down the others.I was quickly integrated to the university slang where ‘freshers’ were being ‘ponyokwad’ with, ’resit’ was a term for failure and ‘exile’ was when your roommate ask you for time out to have a behind closeddoor meeting with a female student. My early days were fun filled and we always joke a bout it my buddies.

What You Should Know About SOMU
Contempt and criticisms characterizeall kind of political and elective positions anywhere in the world. Some of these criticisms are warranted while others are mere pejoratives of prejudiced minds. S.O.M.U has had a fair share of criticisms and all who have served inSOMU have not been spared, they all have been demonized as incompetent ingrates only motivatedto “kukula pesa zetu”. Some SOMU officials are evidently very mediocre and deserve to be criticized. But it’s not justified to condemn and criticizejust for the sake of criticism and condemnation as it is evident that many are hell-bent in portraying SOMU as unresponsive, unproductive and a near useless organization. This is the single story that most have of SOMU/SGC. Misallocation of student funds, underperformance, unfulfilled promises, unresponsive members are some of the allegations making up this single story of SOMU, some of this might be true but making it the definitive story of SOMU is not okay! This single story of SOMU demoralizes the truly committed leaders; this single story will rob some of them from the credits they deserve and their dignity, this single story denies many the opportunity toparticipate in SOMU activities or even running for a given post as recently experienced where only single contestants showed up for thepost of Editor and the Organizing secretary respectively. This single story will make many blind to any kind of achievement by SOMU. How can SOMU be vocal in the national politics if it does not have the support of the students because of the contempt it is held?SOMU comprises of not only theStudent Governing Council(SGC), which everyone seems to criticize but it also comprises affiliate bodies like MUABS, MUACU, RED CROSS, MUCSA thus the criticisms do not spare such well meaning organizations as well.SOMU’s duties is simply to act as the link between the student body and the administration, to be the mouth piece of the student body and air their grievances, to work for the students and with the administration, to follow up in making enquiries and propose new ideas and bring down the administration to be student friendlyand responsive to their needs. SOMU ensures that all semester activities are conducted on time and successfully and many sacrifice both their time and energy towards this end.The expectations that we have of SOMU is an unrealistic one, we expect SOMU to do things magically, to fix that blown inflorescent tube in your room almost immediately (and you have not reported to anyone), tomake sure transcripts don’t have re-sits on them, to make the queues at the mess be shorter, to make surethat the library is fully stocked, to make sure that there is a television in every hostel. When they don’t meet this expectations the “robin hood” style, all you get is very cruel accusations against it. The roles of Maseno university administration and that of SOMU is not the same, SOMU might not do some things because it is out of theirmandate. We should all strive to recognize the correct boundaries to prevent both the exaggerated disdain, contempt for and help restore the confidence that we should have in this organization.Limited resources, falling confidencein, lack of support from student’s body and the bottleneck of bureaucracy in addressing student’s grievances and even raising funds for their activities are some problems that affects the performance of SOMU immensely.SOMU members on the other hand should strive to embrace ethics, integrity and serve with diligence, ridthemselves of tribal alliances, corruption and the culture of mediocrity which greatly hinders their performance and till they do that it is no doubt that the criticism and mistrust will always be directed to their activities.

Such scenes remind meof a DVD machine, you enjoy a movie, but on pressing some button it yells at you: THIS BUTTON IS NOT USABLE NOW!!! Maseno Plans to Open New Campus in Siaya
Siaya county is set to have a university campus. The county government yesterday signed an agreement with the Maseno University to establish a constituent campus in the region.Vice chancellor Prof Mark Awiti said the university will start offering courses at the Agricultural Training Centre in Siaya from this month. He said the university will focus on courses that will make a positive impact on the lives on Siaya residents.Awiti said the university will offer technical courses which most universities ignore, as there are no middle-level colleges to offer the courses in Siaya."We should move away from the trend of creating white collar jobs,"he said.Awiti was speaking during the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding at Governor Cornel Rasanga's office. The governor assured employees of the Agricultural Training Centre, where the campus will be established, that they will not lose their jobs. He said the two institutions will coexist."Let me assure the public that employees of ATC will not be laid off once Maseno University kicks off its programmes," the governor said.Rasanga commended the universityfor the initiative and said the county government will improve facilities in the institution and build a modern library. The meeting was attended by Deputy Governor Ouma Onyango, county secretary Kepher Marube and chief of staff Alois Obare among others.Onyango proposed that the county government and the university forms a team that will oversee the establishment of the campus.

What Campus Girls can do to Men
I have never been the kind of lady who sympathizes with men but on this occasion, I had to climb down my feminist pedestal and feel sorryfor a brother. He had exhausted all the ‘mistaris’ trying to convince the beauty to go and spend the night inhis room. She was a beautiful one by all means. She was in a small white dress with red heels. Half of her brown thighs were showing and the bright light made things look much more inviting, to the guyof course! One could almost smell the lust in the air as the guy would occasionally try to reach the girl’s waist (or bum?) much to her annoyance. They must have been from town as she was carrying a well loaded Tusky’s shopping bag. From the look of things, a brother had dented his HELB balance to please her. She was worth every penny though- every woman is.At this point the guy must have ran out of all avenues to get the sister give it up to him. He must have surrendered to the heavens but they only seemed to respond with more down pour; seemingly weeping on his behalf or perhaps buying more time for him to get a bit creative. He didn’t because she always had a counter argument to everything he had to say. Trust smart women to eat their cake and have it at the same time. I am hopeless romantic, the guy seemed to worship at the altar of hopeless romance too, hence my bias towards him in the unfolding drama. The Alchemist’s assertion that “if you want something so badly, the entire universe will conspire and give it to you” was being put to its very own test. I have never seen a man want a woman sooo badly! He was on the verge of desperation and you know how unsightly things can get when a guy is desperate. Thank goodness he did not cry or kneel! For us women, we could always excuse desperation with ‘love’ or even good old drama queen syndrome but for a man, ah ah, Nimekataa! No matter how bad things are, a man has to put himself together and remain a man for heavens’ sake! Get creative or even plain rude and salvage your image as a man. Tell her she is not your type after all (ok, not creative) or tell herthat her cheeks sag (haha! Don’t trythis at home)! For sanity’s sake, please don’t take away anything you had bought her when she declines you. Just walk away the minute she plays hard ball and trust me, she will come running after you in a matter of weeks, we always do. Nothing intrigues us more than a guy who is not keen on chasing after us. We cherish theattention and suspense that comes with being chased; we always look forward to the next card that will be pulled and given this kind of excitement, most of us wouldn’t mind being chased by the same guy for ages without giving in! At least until the biological clock begins to click loud enough for us to hear. Ever wondered why ladies tend to fall for players so hard? Well, they are bad for our self esteem and to prove that we still have it, we have to do the chasing! Corny as it may sound, it is true; sorry for busting your bubble girls! No woman wants to live with the thought that she failed to make a certain man weak.I didn’t get to know how things ended as I left before the rain had completely stopped as it was getting late. On my way I couldn’t help but sympathize with the guy. He must have sent his roommate to exile and tidied up his place in anticipation for the night. He must have spent an arm and leg shopping for the lady in order to please her but what did he get in return? brokenness the next few weeks or so and a crushed ego (or heart?!) I imagined him spending the cold night alone or maybe going to spend it with that one girl who has always been eager to be his girlfriend but whom he has friend-zoned for obvious reasons. Icould imagine him making up stories to his friends the next day about how interesting the night hadbeen with his princess. Or maybe, just maybe, the universe had conspired after all and given him the woman of his dreams for the night and sooner or later I shall getan invite for their wedding! That is officially on my wish list, he really should get her. I know a man with love when I see one, and he truly was.I do not know either of them and have never seen them again since then but every night as I lie down and do my night time prayers, I always pray that the couple will happen someday. Perhaps I am just engaging myself with what does not even remotely concern me but to all hopeless romantics out there, let us hold on to love andkeep praying for each other; someday we shall all live happily ever after! Can I get an Amen please, anyone?! And oh, ladies, he was not the tall, dark and handsome type…too bad.

MASENO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS GO WEETABIX
Finally it’s Friday. They call it members day. The weather is just good enough to support the day’s events. Events that I and others of my kind like. Lectures are on as usual but to us we can’t afford to miss the evens at the expense of those usually boring2hr lectures. We start our party day with the event at the graduation square commonly known as the G square. The place is not as usual ,it is a brand new G square colored yellow, not by waterproof or water paint but by the stands advertising the product in promotion(WEETABIX), very sexy indeed. At the venue there is one thing that is eye-catching, a small, pimped, yellow vehicle that I hear some of the comrades, especially chicks, say that they would in futurewish to own one of that kind. We are all anticipating a great day.Niggas and chicks stroll the graduation square for a piece of Weetabix promotion show. In the house there’s a live Dj with his decks on and his backup crew. The hot chicks, looking so lovely and attractive purely catch my eye then Idecide to go for a peep. My camera on and clicking I stride onto the fancy side of my hobbies. Am very much willing to capture each and every moment of the event and from different angles with the quality pictures that my 10MP cam can take. There’s no better way to start an event than a dancing competition and for sure we surely we do have all kind of dancers in Maseno. Fromb ballers to dance halers I get carried away by the kind of moves being depicted by these two awesome gals doing all the whine and kotch that konshens babies do on his videos. This makes the ‘good comrades’ (those who came to school to learn, those who can’t miss lectures) move out of the nearby lecture has such as Hindocha come to stare at the shaking assess. From dancing the MC takes us on an away spree; totally unexpected…guys competing on press up or are they pushups????-Nevertheless the big boys battle it out for battle of the mighty and the winner truly deserves it.Take a look at some of the pictures….
Standard Digital Entertainment in Maseno
There is massive turnout and then there is Maseno University turnout! This edition of Standard Digital Campus Tour was held at the Maseno University, the only university on the equator, a fact seems to be a great source of pride for the students along the Kisumu-Busia road. While we were hoping for a good turnout, nothing could have prepared us for the turnout which edged close to 7000 students. Geared and ready for a night of gospel partying, the Mase students streamed into the field that was already pulsating to the crazy well balanced sound from the speakers. The Campus Tour brought to you by Standard Digital and System Unit was happening on Friday at absolutely no cost.Night kicked off with MC Angel getting the crowd all worked up and ready to dance. Performancesfrom Saint Stevoh, Benachi, Innocent Persons, Canflexx and Simbo Owade. The general himselfHopekid took to the stage with his National Anthem intro and boy didhe get the people turned up.All this time, the crowd asked where the queen on gospel herself, Size 8, was coming to perform. And so she did, raining down fire with her trademarkmateke. Two ambitious students tried to perform the mateke moves but turns out that it’s not aseasy as Size 8 makes it look.Gospel veteran, Rufftone, took to the stage and blessed the crowd with his golden oldies before hitting them up with his newest hits. As with every Campus Tour, we have a surprise artist for the fans. This time, it was Willy Paul and that man shut down the place!Willy put up a show that left the fans screaming. The ladies probably for his toned muscles (he had a vest on..God bless his heart), and the men probably at the kick ass shoes that Willy was rocking. Either way, they could all agree that his music and performance was out of this world. The artist did back flips, stage flips, audience flips and contorted his body in ways that somehow ended up looking like a dance, a very good dance. On the deck, we had DJ Tabz, whose beauty could only be superseded by her skills on the decks! The law student, 3rdyear by the way, kept the crowd on their feet and Twitter on fire. Everydude was smitten by this lasses’ talent and beauty.Groove Award winning DJ Mo proved why he keeps winning. His mastery of the decks kept the MASE students dancing and sweating for hours. Combined with hypemaster, MC Njugush, nothing was going to dampen this party.Special thanks to the head of entertainment, Mwangi and the people of Jumbosounds for making this possible.

Fight over a sugar dady in Maseno University
Thursday 19thSeptember 2013 -There was drama in Maseno University yesterday evening after two second year Education students fought in public over a sugar daddy. The two were dating a sugar daddy, a brother to a famous Luo politician when one of them bustedthe other romping with him in the hostels.According to eye witnesses, the two were dating the man unaware of the other’s presence in the man’s life. Each one thought she was the only one and they would brag to friends of how they have connections with politicians just bythe mere fact that they were datingthe brother. However, drama unfolded when word went round and reached one of the girls that the sugar daddy was somewhere within campus and definitely not with her. Quickly, the 22 year old girl hired bouncers to go beat up the girl who was messing up with the boyfriend. They ambushed the two as they were romping in the lady’s room. Realizing that he was about to cause a huge scene, the brother to the politician bribed the bouncers who went missing leaving the two ladies to handle their issue. They engaged in a fist fight tearing each other’s blouse and pulling their hair. They accused each otherof stealing the man attracting otherstudents who love such scenes. A caretaker however intervened bringing the drama to an abrupt end.

CCTV CAMERAS IN ALL MASENO EXAM HALLS
CCTV cameras in all exam halls as ministry asks universities to set up quality assurance departments.Expect CCTV cameras in all exam halls as ministry asks universities to set up quality assurance departments. Universities do all they can to clampdown on exam cheating, but as technology advances, students are outsmarting them. Not only is exam cheating happening in Kenyan universities but also in Eastern and Western countries. For instance, one of the universities in China has banned university students from entering into the exam room with bras, which it believes are being used to sneak in listening devices.Responding to the quality educationissue, Education cabinet secretary Prof. Kaimenyi met with the president of German academic exchange service president, Prof. Margret Wintermantel at Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi where they discussed on different ways to support and improve higher education in Kenya.Thereafter, Prof. Kaimenyi addressed a media briefing where he said, quote unquote “our objective is to create systems that will enable universities to offer quality education as they increase enrollment…”The ministry also indicated that it expects public universities to set upquality assurance departments to monitor learning programmes.

IT IS CITY CAMPUS TO EASE CONGESTION IN MASENO’S MAIN CAMPUS
These grave concerns led to a series of meetings by the University Management that resulted in the agreement that six departments in the main campus be transferred to the City Campus in Kisumu. The Departments affected by the decision are the School of Economics and Business Studies, Department of Regional and Urban Planning, Department of Sociology, Department of Political Science and International Relations, Department of anthropology and the department of Criminology. The move was however to affect only 660 students in their third and fourth years of study in the aforementioned departments.
The move was however questioned by a large section of the students affected. One of the views expressed concerning the matter was that it was pointless inconveniencing 660 students in their final years or nearing the completion of their studies by relocating them yet the number moved was hardly significant to make any real difference in creating room for the accommodation of over 5000 incoming freshmen.
Another issue of concern raised by the students was that the accommodation in the city was far too expensive as well as the cost of living. Students also expressed concerns about their safety as they would be living in off-campus hostels and wanted to be guaranteed that they would be provided with security once they are moved to City Campus. However, there are those who were infuriated by the decision citing lack of diplomacy as they felt that they should have been consulted by the administration and the students’ union before implementing the decision.
The information posted by the outgoing student’s leader James Okumu however indicated that the campus administration will subsidize the cost of meals within the City Campus and that the University was looking for hostels suitable for student accommodation which would be communicated later on.

How Maseno University Students Can Fight the Police

The students barricaded the road, threw stones at the anti riot police who were trying to quell the riots.
At some point, the police were forced to use tear gas canisters to disperse the rioting students.
The protests caused a major traffic snarl-up on the road forcing commuters to seek alternative routes.
The 6-hour battle started in the wee hours of the morning when students complained that they were losing property to residents living around the campus.
The students and locals have had bad blood in the recent past with students accusing locals of stealing phones, laptops and other household goods.
Students claim that there has been an increase in theft cases around Mabungo and Nyawita areas and no action had been taken against culprits.
At one time, the locals intervened to help the police repulse the students who had overwhelmed the anti riot police.
The cause of the insecurity is said to be inadequate housing facilities forcing them to seek alternative hostels outside the campus.
Maseno University Vice Chancellor Prof. Dominic Makawiti said lack of accommodation can not be blamed for insecurity.
“Even if we had the capacity to accommodate all our students inside the institution, we would still find ways of co-existing with the locals,” he said.
Kisumu County police commander David Ngetich said police would stay on guard overnight at the university to ensure situation returns to normal.
